Our hospital partner ChandraPrabha, located in the city of Jorhat, India. The hospital is also a World Health Organization collaborating centre.

In 1963, Operation Eyesight started working with Arogyavaram Eye Hospital in Sompeta, India. Today we have dozens of partner hospitals in India and Africa, and we’ve supported many more in the past. These partners are the key to our model of Hospital-Based Community Eye Health care.

In many cases, our partnership with hospitals involves our unique Non-Financial Technical Partnership. In this partnership, our skilled staff offer expert advice, training and evaluation instead of financial assistance. We’ve found that this is the best way to encourage our partners to provide quality, sustainable services.

Some of our key hospital-related accomplishments in 2016:

  • Indian hospital partners performed over 175,000 sight-saving surgeries
  • Implemented 43 Hospital-Based Community Eye Health projects in India
  • Re-entered Nepal and assisted Nepal Eye Hospital and Fateh-Bal Eye Hospital in screening over 250,000 patients for eye problems
  • Installed low-vision diagnostic equipment in 18 hospitals in Ghana

In addition to supporting hospitals with technical knowledge and equipment, we also fund training of local doctors, nurses, ophthalmic technicians, community workers and more. In this way, we’re building health care that can be sustained without foreign support. We also support our hospital partners through the equipping or refurbishment of their eye care facilities, such as the Ophthalmic Centre at University Teaching Hospital in Zambia.

We also work with rarer forms of blindness. In 2015, with the help of a generous donor family, we opened the world-class Operation Eyesight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer at the L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India. In order to combat the growing incidence of ocular cancer in India, the facility provides quality, comprehensive cancer treatment for children and adults, all at low or no cost to them.
