Phil is a retired partner of the McLennan Ross law firm. He was appointed by the Government of Canada as a Queen’s Counsel in 1985. He’s a graduate of the University of Alberta (commerce) and of Queen’s University (law). Phil had a Martindale Hubbell AV rating, which is an international ranking designating skill and ethics at the highest level.

He has served on the council of governors of the Edmonton Aviation Historical Society, the Alberta Economic Development Authority, the Calgary Convention Authority Board, as chair of the Alverta Association of Colleges and Technical Institutes and as chair of the national board of the United Nations Association of Canada. He is currently chair of the FSHD Canada Foundation.

Phil has also been active in a range of cultural and arts association. He was a board member of the Edmonton Symphony, Alberta Performing Arts Stabilization Foundation, chair of the board of the Edmonton Concert Hall Foundation, board member and chair of the Banff Centre, board member of the Canada Council for the Arts, and chair of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation.

He received a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International, was inducted into the Edmonton Cultural Hall of Fame, received the Golden Jubilee medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal from the Government of Canada, the Alberta Centennial medal from the Government of Alberta, and is a Fellow of the Banff Centre.

Elected to Operation Eyesight’s board of directors in January 2018, Phil says, “Growth, both educational and personal, is benefitted by being able to see clearly. I want to help Operation Eyesight provide this opportunity by continuing to be ethical and financially responsible.”
