DEFINITION:"Dunny" or "dunny can" is an Australian term for toilet, either the room or the specific fixture, especially an outhouse or other outdoor toilets.
Trachoma is the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness, and Operation Eyesight Australia is intent on breaking the cycle of blinding trachoma in sub-Saharan Africa. A key factor is the flies that spread the microorganism that causes trachoma. Flies can be greatly reduced with the simple use of enclosed, ventilated latrines – a convenience sorely lacking in rural Kenya and Zambia.
The good news is a proper latrine for one family costs only $65, but what a difference it can make. The Donate A Dunny campaign demonstrates a uniquely Australian approach to tackling avoidable blindness in the developing world. It seeks to provide basic sanitation for hundreds of African families. The campaign will feature the leadership of film actor Michael Caton as Operation Eyesight Australia’s International Ambassador. Michael, known for his unique style of Australian humour, is now focusing his talents on the serious matter of blindness prevention. He has long been aware of Operation Eyesight, particularly through the work of photographer Peter Carrette who has shot thousands of images of the people Operation Eyesight comes into contact with (many appear on this website).
